Tomatoes have been an obsession of mine for, actually, as long as I can remember. Growing up in Ohio, summers were filled with fresh, ripe, home-grown tomatoes. I ate them sliced with a little salt.
I see tomatoes as a very feminine fruit. The colors can be dull and vibrant at the same time. They are dry on the outside but juicy on the inside. The skin is not thick but strong. They are tender and round.
In the grocery store, I love to watch people pick up tomatoes and test their ripe tenderness. I parallel this to testing the ripe tenderness of a womans breast.
With these ideas in mind, I have been creating a series of self-portraits; depictions of a carefree, yet a vulnerable girl, who is completely nude except for her breasts are covered by tomatoes. The girl is always faceless and often is so nude her hair is the same pigment as her skin. She is my two-dimensional identity, an identity that lives to be shared on paper.
